Bankruptcy Filings on Rise

Consumer bankruptcy filings rose 33% in the 3rd quarter, 2009. This shows the weak economy continues to take a toll on people and businesses. The filing of 388,485 bankruptcies were the most in any quarter since the law changed in 2005. It appears that more than 1,400,000 bankruptcy petitions will be filed in all of 2009. Homeowners who are in mortgage foreclosure are filing chapter 13 to stop the loss of their homes. People who are overwhelmed by credit card debt are filing chapter 7.
