From where I sit, advising and helping homeowners in foreclosure, the mortgage modification program is not working families. Mortgage companies are unwilling or unable to provide the relief that families need. Many people are asked to fax the same documents ten times to a company representative. People can't get through, people are put on hold, transferred, disconnected and hung up upon time and time again. Later they are told they don't qualify for no apparent reason other than the mortgage company's say so. Other homeowners get a modification offer which is no better than the mortgage they have had.
It is time to crack the whip and protect homeowners. Congress should reintroduce Judicial Modification of Mortgages through the bankruptcy law. If a person is willing to file bankruptcy, then they should be able to get the relief necessary to save their home by giving them a fighting chance to pay a reasonable mortgage payment. The banks, mortgage companies, investors and insurance companies received $880 billion of TARP money and they turn around and give themselves lavish bonuses in the millions. The banks with voluntary mortgage modification have given the American tax payer and home owner nothing, NOTHING! Lay the hammer down Congress and give real Americans real relief. Pass JMM now. Help American families keep their homes.
Call your two Pennsylvania senators, Specter and Casey. Tell the assistant who answers the phone that you need this bankruptcy bill to save your home. Don't be shy. They will listen to you and pass it on to the senator. This is important for you and America. Your phone call makes a difference. Call right now. Also, Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois is the sponsor of the bill; call or email his office to show your support.
Senator Arlen Specter: 215-597-7200 He does not support the bill; tell him you need the bill and that he should change his mind and help you and Pennsylvania.
Senator Robert Casey: 717-231-7540 He supports the bill; thank him and encourage him to get the Senate moving on this.
Senator Dick Durbin: 202-224-2152 Tell him you need the bill to save your home and thank him for his efforts.
The House of Representatives passed the bill on March 5, 2009:
Congressman Patrick Murphy: 215-348-1194 Voted for its passage.
Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz: 215-517-6572 Voted for its passage.
Congressman Jim Gerlach 610-409-2780
Congressman Joe Sestak 610-892-8623 Voted for its passage.
Congressman Charles Dent 215-541-4106 Voted against the bill.
